William Flynn

A Midwest native, William Flynn is a guitarist and composer emerging onto the contemporary jazz community with an increasingly original musical voice. As a performer, William has spent years playing and freelancing in the Columbus, OH; Dallas, TX; and Wichita, KS areas. Recent highlights include performances with his original music project Driver. Wichita's F5 Magazine has hailed William's writing for the group as “uplifting and inspiring” and has described Driver as being able to “[lift] the music off the page and into the hearts of the audience”. In 2014, the group was featured on both the Wichita Jazz Festival and ICT Festival, and was commissioned by the Wichita Art Museum to compose and perform a live soundtrack to the silent French film Le Voyage dans la Lune . William's 2015 CD release, The Songbook Project , is his debut with Armored Records, and features his modern jazz arrangements of rock and pop music of the 90s and new millennium. William's writing can also be heard on his 2012 Bandcamp release, William Flynn Group .

As a graduate student at the University of North Texas, William held the guitar chair with the world-renowned and Grammy-nominated One O' Clock Lab Band. As a member of the One O' Clock, William performed alongside such jazz luminaries as John Clayton, Wayne Bergeron, Terell Stafford, Dennis DiBlasio, and Frank Greene. Additionally, William can be heard featured on the band's 2012 release: Lab 2012 .

As an educator, William has presented at the Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop, Seattle Jazz Guitar Society, Oklahoma Baptist University, Brazosport College (Lake Jackson, TX), and St. Louis Community College (Wildwood, MO), and has performed as a guest artist at the University of Missouri and Oklahoma Baptist University. William has adjudicated both the Wichita State University Jazz Invitational and Palace City Jazz Festival (Mitchell, SD), and is co-founder of the Palace City Summer Jazz Camp. His educational writing has been published in Just Jazz Guitar magazine and can be found online on his Jazz Tips Blog .

William holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from Capital University (Columbus, OH), and a Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas, where he held a position as a Graduate Teaching Fellow.

William currently serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz Guitar at Wichita State University, where he teaches applied jazz guitar, jazz improvisation, and directs the Guitar Ensemble.
