Matt MacDougall is a guitarist and composer from Atlantic Canada, specializing in various styles
of music including jazz, fusion, rock, and free improvised music. Despite being formally trained in
music as a child, MacDougall discovered his true passion for music when picking up a guitar at the age
of 13. Upon discovering his passion, it was not long until he began exploring a more complex side of music, venturing into jazz and classical genres.
Years later, MacDougall would go on to receive his Bachelor of Music degree in jazz studies
from St. Francis Xavier University. Over the course of his four years at St.F.X., he became a sought
after guitarist both locally and abroad. His abilities as a guitarist and composer have led him to many
great opportunities in the jazz world, including performances at at the Ottawa Jazz Festival with the
Galaxy Rising Stars Youth Summit Group, at the Halifax Jazz Festival, as well as sharing the stage in
concert or clinic settings with renowned jazz artists such as Jerry Bergonzi, John Abercrombie, Tim Hagans, John Surman, and Mike Murley, to name a few.
With the aid of trumpeter/ professor of jazz studies at St. Francis Xavier Paul Tynan, bassist
Casey Thompson, and drummer Jared Farney, MacDougall is to release his debut album as a leader,
Familiar Faces, in September of 2012 on Armored Records.
Matt MacDougall is currently in the Master of Music (jazz studies) program at Indiana
University Jacob's School of Music, where he works as an associate instructor. He plans to continue on
studying, composing, improvising, teaching, and recording music as frequently as possible throughout
